What is the Great Migration and when can I see it?

The Great Migration is the annual movement of around 1.5 million wildebeest, plus hundreds of thousands of zebra and gazelle, between the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Maasai Mara in Kenya. The herds are typically in the Mara from late July to October, with dramatic Mara River crossings being the highlight.

Do I need a visa to enter Kenya?

Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before arrival, which you apply for online at the official Kenyan government portal. Approval usually takes 1–3 days. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates with two blank pages.

How do I get from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara?

You have two main options: a scenic road transfer (5–6 hours by 4×4 from Nairobi) or a short scheduled flight (45–50 minutes from Wilson Airport to one of the Mara airstrips such as Keekorok, Ol Kiombo or Musiara). We arrange both, including pickup from JKIA on arrival.

Yes. The Mara is one of the most established and well-managed safari destinations in Africa. You will always be with an experienced guide, and our camps and lodges have strict safety protocols. As anywhere, you should follow your guide's instructions — particularly around wildlife and after dark.

What should I pack for a safari?

Accepted Answer

Neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a warm fleece or jacket for early morning game drives, a hat, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle, binoculars, a good camera with a zoom lens, and any personal medication. Soft duffel bags are easier than hard suitcases on small aircraft.

Do I need vaccinations or malaria medication?

A Yellow Fever certificate is required if you are arriving from a Yellow Fever country. Routine vaccines should be up to date, and Hepatitis A and Typhoid are commonly recommended. The Maasai Mara is a malaria area, so consult your doctor about antimalarial prophylaxis well before you travel.

What animals will I see on safari?

The Mara is famous for the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino (rhino are rarer). You will also commonly see cheetah, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, topi, eland, jackal, and an incredible variety of birdlife. Sightings are never guaranteed but our guides know the Mara intimately.

Costs vary widely depending on the season, length of stay, type of accommodation and group size. Budget camping safaris can start from around USD 200–300 per person per day, mid-range tented camps from USD 400–600, and luxury lodges from USD 800 and up. We tailor every quote to your preferences.

What currency should I bring and are cards accepted?

The Kenyan Shilling (KES) is the local currency. US Dollars are widely accepted at lodges and for park fees (bring crisp notes dated 2013 or later). Most lodges accept Visa and Mastercard, but bring some cash for tips, curios and remote areas with no card facilities.

Is tipping expected?

Tipping is customary and appreciated. As a rough guide: USD 10–20 per guest per day for your safari guide, USD 5–10 per guest per day for camp/lodge staff (often via a communal tip box), and a small tip for porters and drivers. Tips are best given in USD or KES cash.

Can I visit a real Maasai village?

Yes — this is one of our most loved experiences. We arrange respectful, hosted visits to authentic manyattas where you will meet elders, learn about Maasai traditions, watch the warrior dance, try beadwork and support the village directly. There is a small community fee per visitor.

Is the Maasai Mara good for families with children?

Absolutely. Many lodges welcome families and offer kid-friendly game drives, junior ranger programs and cultural activities. We can tailor the pace, vehicle setup and accommodations to suit children of different ages. Most lodges have a minimum age of 6 or 8 for game drives.

Mobile coverage is patchy but generally available around Talek and main lodges. Most camps and lodges offer Wi-Fi in common areas, though speeds are slower than in cities. We recommend embracing the digital detox — the Mara is best experienced fully present.

The Mara sits at around 1,500m elevation, so days are warm (22–28°C) and mornings/evenings can be cool (10–15°C). Long rains fall from March to May and short rains in November. Even in the dry season, pack layers — early morning game drives can be chilly.
